Nikolas Cruz Trial Begins

Jury Selection is underway in the Nikolas Cruz trial. Nikolas Cruz already pleaded guilty in a Florida courtroom back on October 21, 2021, to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the same school where he was a student just a few years ago. It will be up to a jury to decide whether Nikolas Cruz will get to live or die, during the sentencing phase of the trial.

Jury selection is a crucial part of any trial. Jurors are the triers of fact and decide the defendant’s fate based on their review of the evidence presented. The Judge, Elizabeth Scherer, defense counsel, and the prosecutor will all have a chance to speak to potential jurors to decide whether or not they are a right fit for this case.

In this case, the stakes are even higher where selected jurors will eventually determine whether Cruz will face the death penalty or life in prison (which is the minimum sentence he can receive in this case). The death penalty is still legal in 27 states and active in 24 states. While Capital punishment is a legal penalty in California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania, these three states have a governor-imposed moratorium.

The trial is expected to last a few weeks.
