1999 Murder Charges Against Adnan Syed Dropped Today

After 23 long years, all charges against Adnan Syed were dropped. The 41-year old was serving a life sentence after a jury convicted him in 2000 of strangling his former girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, whose body was found in Baltimore.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, the state’s attorney for Baltimore, Marilyn Mosby, said that recently tested DNA completely exculpated Syed from the crime: “His DNA was excluded,” Mosby said. She declined to say if any other known suspects may be implicated in the recent DNA testing, saying that the investigation is ongoing.

Adnan Syed spent 23 years in prison for a crime as a result of a wrongful conviction. Adnan Syed gets to go home to his family as a free man.
